Hi all,
just to say "thanks!" for this sparkling community.
Since 1998 i growed up with this list, musically and
technically, and not only for csound skills. Many
people here are 'living legends' for me.

So i've started an abstract ambient project: csound is
one of my favorite tools for this genre.
If you have 4 mins to lose, you can listen my first
song 'Specula noctis', and give me some (really
precious) feedback.

mplayerplugin allowed me to play it and download it without registering.
It is a very nice work by the way. What did you use for source sounds. I
hear voices, metal things, birds, a door close + creek?, and some low drum like sound.

Hi Jk

I found your piece interesting, the sonority are well
choosen for the ambiant style of the piece.
I can say you two thing that You can consider or not.
The periodic percussion is ( i think ) a little bit to
loud, at the beginning it goes well, but at the end of
the piece it is a little redondant. Put it softer
won't kill the effect. Or maybe by filtering it...
The second thing is on the general mix. I don't know
if you heard piece by françois bayle, ferrari,
schwarz. They alway gives relief to each sound to make
their composition lives. More inerraction between the
voices.

Aniway, good job

Hi jk.
I think that it is a fascinating piece.
I was wondering how much of csound (if any) is in it.

Hi and thanks for listening and feedback.

I have a very strange way to work with sounds, because
my primary interest is the sound as it is, as object.
So mainly i record a lot of various sounds with a
portable dat recorder for my personal 'sonotheque' and
then i catalog them with sonograms (i extensively use
Sonogram by Christoph Lauer). When i want to compose
for myself music i really like (this doesn't happen
frequently 'cause i produce many popular music on
business) i tend to come up with short parts
(sometimes very shorts!) of songs and have a hard time
elaborating them into full pieces.
In composition i use csound mainly for 2 tasks:
phasing and granulation.
My starting point for phasing is stringphaser orcsco
by Sean Costello and Josep M Comajuncosas: i think
this is a miracolous effect, it's give me that
japanese (!?) sound quality i love (you can hear this
kind of effect in 'Specula noctis').
Instead starting point to granulize sounds (mainly
voices) is ACCCI 70_01_2 orcsco by Ron K. Parks: it
has an interesting 'uniform pseudo random
selection of grain start point'.
I use CsoundAV as compiler.

My next task is to consider and study what Nicolas
Drweski say: keep the various 'streams' of a song in a
clear separation, giving composition more interraction
between the 'layers'. Instead the periodic percussion
is so loud for choice.

I hope haven't annoyed you!

ciao

Jk,

Have ever tried working in 5.1 or 7.1 your "ambient"
music because it offer much more opportunity to create
"sons inouis". And its gives much more ideas on sound
evolution and clarity in "writting". I don't know if
you have acces to a studio or if you have a surround
system, but this music is really made for surround
system.
Aniway your music was interesting to listen. I will
post one on the same genre if you would like, made
with csound and pro tools.
